A recent study from the United States reveals that sleeping more than nine hours a night can negatively impact the brain, leading to a decline in cognitive abilities and even accelerated degradation, particularly among patients with depression. The study analyzed 1,853 participants aged 27 to 85, none of whom had dementia or suffered strokes, and found a negative correlation between sleep duration and cognitive function.

Dr. Hsin-Chien Lee, director of the Sleep Research Center at Taipei Medical University, stated that prolonged sleep often reflects underlying health issues such as sleep apnea or chronic insomnia. He advises individuals who frequently sleep over nine hours to closely examine their health conditions.

Dr. Lee also suggests keeping a record of sleep habits to determine the ideal sleep duration for oneself, emphasizing that good sleep contributes to brain detoxification and bodily repair, and that both inadequate and excessive sleep need to be adjusted.
